CHICAGO, IL—American Latinos are on the cusp of getting the Smithsonian treatment, and Guerrero’s flagship publication Hispanic Executive is here to tell the story. Hispanic Executive is launching an oral history on the making of the National Museum of the American Latino (NMAL), a Smithsonian museum that has yet to be constructed.

The museum has been in development for nearly three decades. In 2020, the Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino successfully lobbied Congress to pass legislation allowing the Smithsonian to build the museum. While one crucial step was taken in 2022 with the opening of the temporary Molina Family Latino Gallery, which is currently housed inside the National Museum of American History, the full museum has not yet broken ground.

Hispanic Executive worked closely with the NMAL’s executive team and allies to break down the long, complex history behind the museum’s conception, dive into the search for a permanent site on the National Mall, offer a glimpse of the museum’s future, and more. The oral history will include firsthand accounts, photos, and renderings, all of which will paint a rich portrait of the ongoing journey to making this museum a reality.

The oral history will feature insights and commentary from the following four executives:

  • Eduardo Diaz, former Interim Director of the National Museum of the American Latino, Smithsonian
  • Jorge Zamanillo, Director of the National Museum of the American Latino, Smithsonian
  • Estuardo Rodriguez, CEO, Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino
  • Danny Vargas, Board Chair Emeritus, Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino

“Latinos today are making strides that our ancestors could only have dreamed of, and as a Latino-owned organization, Guerrero is passionate about making sure that our history in and contributions to this country do not go unrecognized,” said CEO and Hispanic Executive Publisher Pedro A. Guerrero.
