CHICAGO—Ahead of the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action, Guerrero CEO and Publisher Pedro A. Guerrero spoke with the Wall Street Journal about the implications for corporate America and the rest of the country if the Court rules against affirmative action.
The article—published on June 21, 2023—addresses two parallel college admissions-focused cases presently before the court. While the outcome won’t directly affect employers’ practices and policies, write Lauren Weber and Chip Cutter, “any decision restricting or prohibiting race-conscious admissions could lead to more legal challenges to company hiring and promotion decisions, and more internal resistance to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.”
As a result, this will lessen opportunities for minorities in the workplace. “I am a product of affirmative action, and I’m not ashamed to say it’s really given me a lot of opportunity to create jobs, to build a company,” Guerrero shares with the Wall Street Journal. “I think it’s a great disservice to do away with this.”
Guerrero’s perspective is included alongside Valerie Capers Workman, chief legal officer at Handshake; Celeste Warren, vice president of global diversity and inclusion at Merck; and Nathalie Scardino, executive vice president of recruiting, onboarding, and employee learning at Salesforce.
